A machine can look convincing in a slide deck. In a crop row, it has to contend with dust, uneven ground, weather, timing and the inconvenient fact that the work still has to get done. That is where UC ANR Connect wants agricultural technology companies to make their case.

The program is opening its doors to companies with tools aimed at the operational problems California growers have already identified. The target crops include citrus, berries and pistachios, three businesses with very different rows, harvest calendars and labor demands.

Applications are now open for UC ANR Connect, a grower-informed commercialization program run by UC ANR Innovate, the innovation arm of University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, with ag tech venture firm Farmhand Ventures.

From pitch deck to crop row

The distinction between a clever prototype and a useful farm tool is usually made by logistics. Can it work at the speed of a harvest crew? Does it fit existing equipment? Does it reduce a recurring headache without creating two new ones? UC ANR Connect is built around those questions rather than around novelty for its own sake.

The companies selected through the current cycle will demonstrate their technologies at a live field day. Growers will be able to see the tools operating in production conditions and come away with something more useful than a polished promise: practical evidence about where a system might fit, and where it might not.

That field-based approach has precedent. At an earlier Salinas Valley demonstration, eight agricultural technology providers showed tools related to weeding, thinning, harvesting, drone application and irrigation management in an active vegetable production setting (UC ANR's account of the field day).

The trial is part of the product

For a grower, a demonstration is not a showroom visit. It is a chance to ask whether the technology can survive the particulars of a citrus block, a berry operation or a pistachio orchard: the crop architecture, the work windows, the crew and the equipment already paid for.

A similar UC ANR Connect field day placed eight companies in real vineyard conditions, where attendees could speak directly with developers and consider how the tools might address problems on their own operations (the Hopland field-day report). The useful part was not simply watching a device run. It was the conversation after the device stopped.

The program therefore puts growers in an unusual position for agricultural technology: not as the audience at the end of a sales funnel, but as part of the test. Their feedback is meant to help determine whether a commercially available tool is ready for the conditions California specialty crops actually impose.

For California growers, the immediate value is a closer look at technologies tied to specific production problems rather than a general parade of gadgets. The longer test will be familiar to anyone who has brought new equipment onto a farm: whether the tool earns its place after the demonstration is over.
