An almond tree can look perfectly reasonable in a California mission garden and still refuse to become an industry. The first trees arrived along the coast, where Spanish Franciscan padres planted them in the 1700s. The trees had a harder time there than the mission walls might suggest.
Cool coastal weather stalled their growth. The crop found its better conditions inland, where orchards could move beyond the scale of a garden experiment and into the broad agricultural geography California growers know today. From Mission Tree to Orchard Crop
The decisive chapter came much later. In the mid-20th century, improved irrigation gave inland growers more control over production, while expanding markets gave the harvest somewhere to go. Those two forces—water made more dependable and demand made larger—helped turn almonds from a plant with a long California backstory into a serious commercial crop. Irrigation and market expansion accelerated the industry.
There is a familiar California pattern here, though the almond version has its own particular shape. A crop arrives with an appealing promise, meets the limits of a landscape, and then prospers after growers build the infrastructure that makes the landscape workable. The tree did not change its identity. The surrounding system did.
An Inland Crop With a Global Reach
That system now supports roughly 80% of the world’s almond supply, with more than 7,600 family-run farms cultivating the crop. The figures describe scale, but they also describe distribution: almonds are not simply a crop of a few large holdings or a historical curiosity preserved in mission-era stories. They are planted, managed, harvested, and marketed across a wide network of California farms. California’s current almond reach grew from that inland transition.
For growers, the history is less tidy than a straight line from mission planting to export dominance. The crop needed a suitable interior climate, irrigation capable of supporting commercial orchards, and buyers able to absorb a much larger harvest. Each piece arrived at a different time. Agriculture tends to call this progress after the fact; in the field, it is usually a long sequence of bets that happen to hold.

Inland success was never just about finding warmer ground. It depended on the systems that made that ground productive, and those systems remain part of every orchard decision.
