Aloe is a plant that tends to look unbothered. Its leaves keep their blunt, architectural shape through dry spells, neglect, and the occasional overenthusiastic watering. That composure is now being tested in San Diego County, where an invasive thrips has been found among various aloe species.
The insect, Hercinothrips dimidiatus, is commonly called aloe thrips. Agricultural authorities are asking people who grow aloe at home or for sale to report suspicious sightings, an early-warning system that depends on someone noticing the small thing before it becomes the large thing. The San Diego report describes the detection and the request for reports.
A Southern California Detection
The pest is not confined to one county line. The California Department of Food and Agriculture has confirmed aloe thrips in San Diego, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties, putting aloe growers and plant sellers in three distinct Southern California production and landscape markets on the same alert.
That distribution matters for nursery operators because aloe is moved as living plant material, often in containers that can spend time in retail yards, garden centers, and residential landscapes. A detection in one plant can therefore become a question about where the plant came from, where it has been, and how many hands have handled it.
A Pest With a Regulatory Rating
CDFA has given aloe thrips a B rating, a classification for pests considered to pose a known economic or environmental detriment. The UC Agriculture and Natural Resources account explains that B-rated pests may enter a county when that county agrees to accept them. The label does not make the insect easier to see, but it gives county agriculture officials a framework for handling it.
For growers, the practical work begins with identification and documentation rather than guesswork. A suspect plant should be kept in place while the producer seeks reporting instructions from the relevant county agricultural commissioner or state agriculture authority. Photographs, the plant's location, and information about recent plant movement can help officials determine what they are looking at.
The available reports do not establish how widely aloe thrips is distributed within the three counties or how long individual populations have been present. That leaves county-level reporting especially useful: a clean map is valuable, but so is a map that stops pretending the problem is smaller than it is.
