A field day is a useful place to discover whether a machine has met a crop. The soil is uneven, the rows are occupied, and nobody has time for a device that needs a tidy laboratory. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources has been using that setting to put ag technology in front of California growers.

The next group will be aimed at permanent crops, where a tool may have to work around established trees, vines, trellises, harvest crews, and the long memory of a block. UC ANR Connect is now seeking companies with commercially ready technology for berries, citrus, and avocados through an application process run by UC ANR Innovate.

From Demo Day to Orchard Row

The word commercially matters here. This is not a call for a clever prototype that looks promising under a tent. Selected companies will have the chance to demonstrate their technology at a live field day, where growers can respond to what the tool does in an agricultural setting rather than what its brochure says it might do.

That format follows an earlier UC ANR Connect field day in the Salinas Valley, where companies brought tools for lettuce and leafy greens into active vegetable production. The demonstrations covered work such as weeding, harvesting, and drone application, according to UC ANR’s account of the event.

The Crop Gets a Vote

For a grower, the useful part of a demonstration is often the inconvenient question: Can it move through this block, at this speed, with these workers and this crop? Direct feedback can expose those gaps before a company spends more money building the wrong version of a product—and before a farm spends money buying it.

UC ANR Innovate operates the program with ag-tech venture firm Farmhand Ventures, according to the program announcement. The arrangement places the university’s crop and field network alongside companies trying to move from demonstration toward commercial use.

The emphasis on permanent crops gives the effort a particular California shape. A berry operation may be evaluating labor and harvest logistics; a citrus or avocado grower may be thinking about access between mature trees, seasonal timing, and whether a tool can fit an existing operation without turning the block into a construction project. The announcement does not specify which technologies will be selected.

Companies applying should expect the field day to function as part demonstration and part interrogation. Growers will be looking for the details that determine adoption: where the tool fits, what labor it displaces or adds, and how much adjustment a real California crop will require.
