The glassy-winged sharpshooter is about half an inch long, small enough to disappear among vineyard leaves and large enough to alter a crop map. The invasive leafhopper has now reached Marin County, putting a familiar Northern California question in sharper relief: how far can a pest travel before the vines begin to pay for it?
The insect is dangerous because it spreads the bacteria that causes Pierce’s disease, a disease that eventually kills grapevines. The UC Marin Master Gardeners describe the sharpshooter as a threat to vineyards across the state, where a tidy row of vines can conceal a problem that moves on wings.
A Northern California Problem
California’s wine industry has committed $820,000 to confront the pest. The funding will support research and management efforts, according to the regional industry announcement, with the immediate concern concentrated on protecting wine production in Napa, Sonoma and other Northern California growing areas.
That concern is not theoretical. When the sharpshooter made its first notable California appearance in Temecula in 1999, growers destroyed 300 acres of grapevines and lost $3.5 million in gross agricultural income that year, according to the Sacramento Bee’s account of the state’s pest-prevention strain. A vineyard can look orderly right up until the arithmetic turns ugly.
The new industry contribution arrives alongside a larger federal funding push. California lawmakers have asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for emergency money to contain and eradicate the pest before it moves farther through wine country, an effort reported by the Sacramento Bee. The state and federal requests place the same insect in two different budget conversations: one raised by growers and wineries, the other by public agencies.
Control Work Before the Canopy Changes
For vineyard operators, research and management are less dramatic than pulling vines, but they are the work that can determine whether pulling vines becomes necessary. The industry-backed effort is intended to improve the response to the sharpshooter and the disease it carries, rather than treating the pest as a one-season flare-up.
That distinction matters in counties where vineyards sit beside homes, roadsides, ornamental plantings and nurseries. A pest-control boundary rarely follows a block line, and the insect’s arrival in Marin makes the biosecurity problem more regional than cellar-door local.
The practical questions are still ahead: how the $820,000 will be divided, which management tools receive priority, and how the wine industry’s work will fit with California’s existing Pierce’s disease and sharpshooter programs. The funding creates capacity, but it does not by itself say which vineyard gets inspected first or what happens after a suspect insect is found.
