A laser weeder is an odd thing to bring to a farming forum: part field tool, part quiet science-fiction prop, aimed at a plant small enough to disappear between lettuce rows. At Reservoir Farms in Salinas, that was the point. The machines on display had to make sense in the same vegetable country where crops are harvested quickly, labor is tight and equipment gets no special treatment for being new.

Reservoir Farms hosted its first Ruggedize Forum in Salinas on Aug. 26–27, bringing agricultural technology companies together around the practical problems of specialty-crop production. The demonstrations included laser weeders and AI-powered sprayers for strawberries, tools pitched as responses to labor shortages in vegetable farming. The forum also marked a three-year, $10 million John Deere investment in Reservoir Farms.

A Robot Has to Survive the Row

That last requirement is less glamorous than the software demonstrations suggest. Agricultural robots work outdoors, through dust, weather and long operating days; their hardware has to keep functioning after leaving the clean-room assumptions of Silicon Valley. The Western Growers Association has described the central challenge plainly: farm technology must work continuously in what it calls “obscenely tough conditions.”

The Salinas Valley gives those claims a useful proving ground. A vegetable machine cannot be judged only by whether it identifies a weed or maps a crop. It has to move at a useful speed, avoid damaging marketable plants, and fit the timing and spacing of commercial fields. A clever prototype that needs constant supervision is still, in farm terms, another person to schedule.

From Weeding to Harvesting

Pascal Lebrecque, co-founder of Sami Robotics, highlighted a multifunction harvester designed for crops including broccoli and leafy greens. The broader idea is familiar to growers even if the machine is not: one platform that can do more than one job may be easier to justify than a specialized robot used for a narrow slice of the season.

The forum's equipment lineup reflects how many separate chores technology companies are trying to enter. At a related UC Agriculture and Natural Resources field day near San Juan Bautista, eight providers demonstrated tools for weeding, thinning, harvesting, drone application and irrigation management in active lettuce and leafy-greens production. That field day drew roughly 230 attendees, a sign that the audience for farm robotics is no longer confined to venture investors and conference rooms.

The machinery still has to earn its way into a farm's budget. For a Salinas Valley operation, that means comparing a robot with the labor it is meant to supplement, the crop loss it might prevent, the hours it can actually run and the people required to operate or repair it. Those calculations will differ between a strawberry field and a broccoli block, even when both are presented as targets for automation.

Silicon Valley Meets a Working Field

The relationship between the Silicon and Salinas valleys has been building for roughly a decade through agricultural technology summits and demonstrations. Reservoir Farms is part incubator and part translation service: it gives startups access to agricultural equipment and operating conditions, while growers get an early look at tools before a sales pitch hardens into a product.

UC ANR's Innovate initiative says it has worked with nearly 50 companies since launching in 2024, another indication of how crowded the experiment has become. Its August field day put those companies in an active production setting, where attendees could question technical teams and provide feedback based on their own fields. That exchange may be more consequential than the robots' polished demonstrations: growers know exactly which failures cost money.
