A California winter storm does not need to look dramatic from the cab to become expensive. Water can collect at the end of a field, turn a farm road into a soft trench, or arrive faster than a drainage system can carry it away. Along the coast, the same storm has a longer reach: waves climb higher, bluffs lose their footing and roads can become the least interesting thing to repair.

That is the shape of the season now being forecast. The World Meteorological Organization says the current El Niño may bring above-normal precipitation to California, along with a higher risk of flooding. Strong El Niño events can pull the Pacific jet stream and atmospheric rivers south, sending more storm energy toward the state during December and January.

A Wetter Track Through the State

For growers, the useful question is less whether the winter will be wet than where the water will go after it arrives. A saturated orchard floor can close the window for pruning or equipment work. In vegetable ground, repeated storms can delay bed preparation and leave roads, pumps and harvest access competing for attention.

The forecast carries an extra complication: ocean temperatures along the Pacific Coast are unusually warm. That can feed moisture into storms, raise the snow line and make some precipitation fall as rain at elevations that might otherwise store it as snow according to climate-model analysis. The result is not simply more water on the seasonal ledger; it is water arriving in less convenient forms and at less convenient speeds.

The Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin Valley and coastal growing districts will not experience the same exposure. Low-lying fields and poorly drained blocks may face standing water, while foothill operations can contend with runoff moving downhill through roads, vineyards and orchard margins. Heavy winter storms may also trigger mudslides in inland areas, particularly where slopes and access routes have little room for failure.

The Coast Has Its Own Bill

Coastal communities face a separate combination of high water and moving ground. Forecasters expect intense Pacific systems to bring severe flooding and erosion threats, with larger waves capable of damaging shorelines and disrupting coastal transportation as storms strengthen. For coastal berry, vegetable and nursery operations, a blocked road can matter as much as a flooded field: workers, harvest containers and inputs still have to cross it.

One model gives California's coast a greater than 90% chance of above-normal precipitation from December through February. That is a probability, not a storm calendar. It cannot say which levee, culvert or farm road will fail first, and it does not turn every forecast storm into a disaster. It does, however, make drainage capacity a more practical question than seasonal folklore for the coming winter.

Preparing for Water With Nowhere to Go

The near-term work is unglamorous: clear ditches and culverts, check pumps and backup power, inspect field approaches, and identify blocks where equipment should not enter after a soaking. Growers may also need to stage materials before roads become unreliable and coordinate with irrigation districts or county public-works crews when drainage crosses property lines.

The forecast does not erase the ordinary uncertainty of California weather. The Indian Ocean Dipole may also influence the winter pattern, and the timing, path and intensity of individual atmospheric rivers will determine whether a wet season arrives as a slow series of manageable storms or a few damaging bursts alongside El Niño. For a farm, that distinction is the difference between rescheduling a tractor and evacuating water from a block.
